Wilford Woodruff &
Lorenzo Snow
Wilford Woodruff was an incredibly interesting prophet. His tenure was filled with revelation. Other than Joseph Smith no other President of the Church had more published revelations. He spoke of the time when Joseph Smith was “transformed before us” and glowed as amber because the spirit was so strongly manifested within him. He also cited his prophecy in 1833 that the Saints would eventually settle in the Rocky Mountains.
President Woodruff even revealed that on that “great and dreadful day of the Lord” the Savior will descend in the Rocky Mountains. He spoke of visits to him from the Spirit World of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young and of visits from the Founding Fathers, the latter requesting that their temple work be done for them.Probably no other president emphasized the redemption of the dead more than he. He was the prophet who received the revelation from God ending the solemnization of plural marriages by the Church. He spoke of casting out evil spirits when opening new missions and of his many near encounters with death. His experience of raising his own wife from the dead is also a part of this book.
Both he and his successor President Lorenzo Snow served as a type of bond to the past. Woodruff’s talks were filled with references to his wonderment about his longevity. He was in Kirtland, participated in Zion’s Camp, was driven out of Far West, Missouri, and Nauvoo, Illinois, endured the harsh elements at Winter Quarters, crossed the plains, and drove the very-ill Brigham Young into the Valley after Young’s prophetic utterance that “This is the place.” The initial founders of the Church were long since dead. A couple of generations had arisen that never knew the Prophet Joseph Smith. They personalized him for them. Woodruff and Snow were the last of the apostles to actually know the Prophet Joseph. Their first person testimonies enabled others to carry him within their hearts deep into the twentieth century.
He had three especially powerful witnesses to this, the first when a young man of 22, and the third when the Savior himself visited him in the Salt Lake Temple just prior to his becoming president of the Church, which visit is also a part of this book.
Outside of this personal witness his restoration of the importance of the law of tithing was his major contribution in his three-and-one-half-year tenure as president. This ultimately rescued the Church from financial bondage. His divine revelation on this matter in Saint George is part of established church folklore. |
