Indexing Every president of the Church in some way has conveyed the message that what is said in General Conference is scripture. Some of the statements follow: Brigham Young: “I say now when they, my sermons, are copied and approved by me they are as good scripture as is couched in this Bible, and if you want to read Revelations, read the sayings of him who knows the mind of God…. I have never yet preached a sermon and sent it out to the children of men, that they may not call it scripture.” Lorenzo Snow: “The Lord opens to us the secrets of the celestial kingdom, and He is constantly communicating to us things that we never knew before.” Joseph Fielding Smith: “We are the servants of the Lord, we have received light and truth and revelation from him. He has commanded us to proclaim His truths and live His laws. And so now, in harmony with His mind and will, and as guided by His Holy Spirit, we give counsel and direction to the Saints and to the world.” Harold B. Lee: “If you want to know what the Lord has for this people at the present time, I would admonish you to get and read the discourses that have been delivered at this conference, for what these brethren have spoken by the power of the Holy Ghost is the mind of the Lord, the voice of the Lord and the power of God unto salvation.” Because of these and similar statements we have given scripture-like indexing to each address of each president of the Church in General Conference while he served as such. |
Click here to see an example. If the prophet of God is not speaking the mind and will of the Lord in General Conference then when is he? These and other prophets have spoken to you. They testify that there words come from Jesus Christ. Do you know what they have said? If you are “to live by every word which proceeded forth from the mouth of God” (Sections 84:44 & 98:11) as we are commanded—how will you do this without having these words easily available to you? Because there are so many “words” we have isolated just the addresses given in General Conference by the then existing president of the Church. For ease of having the words at our fingertips we have indexed by Address number and Paragraph number rather than by Section and Verse as in other scriptures but it works the same way.
